Sung Rosary – Fourth Joyful Mystery - The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple

This is the fourth episode of the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, meditated by me, Matthaeus Ruber, through music, singing, and imagery. This work is not intended to be merely a simple illustration of the events narrated in the Gospels, but rather an artistic meditation on the Fourth Joyful Mystery: the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple and the events that followed during the first years of His life. The narrative opens with Mary and Joseph ascending to the Temple of Jerusalem to present the Child to the Lord according to the Law of Moses. The images portray the Temple in all its magnificence, the priests, the sacrifices, and the pilgrims arriving from every part of Israel. The music seeks to evoke the solemnity of ancient worship and the expectation of God's promises. The Hail Marys are sung using different musical themes, each dedicated to a particular moment of the story. As Mary and Joseph present Jesus to the Lord, the elderly Simeon, guided by the Holy Spirit, recognizes in the Child the Messiah awaited for generations. Through the music, I have tried to express the emotion of that encounter and the peace of a man who finally sees God's promises fulfilled. Beside Simeon appears the prophetess Anna, who gives thanks to the Lord and proclaims the coming of the Redeemer. The images and harmonies seek to represent the quiet joy of the righteous who spent their lives awaiting the salvation of Israel. The narrative then moves to Bethlehem. A mysterious star continues to guide the Magi from the East. Through the music, I wanted to evoke the wonder of their long journey, their desire for truth, and their search for the King who would bring light to all nations. The Magi finally arrive before the Child Jesus and offer Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The images show men from distant peoples united in adoration of the Son of God. In this encounter, I wished to represent all the nations of the earth called to recognize Christ as Lord and Savior. But joy soon gives way to tragedy. King Herod, fearing the loss of his power, orders the massacre of the Holy Innocents. The music becomes darker and more sorrowful, accompanying images that remind us of the cost of human wickedness and the mystery of evil that opposes the work of God. Warned by an angel in a dream, Joseph takes Mary and Jesus and flees into Egypt. Through images of the desert and the night journey, I sought to represent the faith, courage, and obedience of the Holy Family, who face exile trusting solely in divine protection. The final Hail Mary is dedicated to contemplating Christ as the Light of the Nations and the Hope of all peoples. Men and women from every nation unite in prayer, recognizing in the Child of Bethlehem the Savior promised by God. The mystery concludes with the Gloria Patri, which lifts our gaze toward the glorious Christ, true God and true Man, who came into the world to save His people. To Him be glory, honor, and praise forever and ever. Amen.
