Sung Rosary – The First Sorrowful Mystery - The Agony of Jesus in the Garden of Olives

This is the first episode of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, meditated by me, Matthaeus Ruber, through music, singing, and images. This work is not intended to be a simple illustration of the events narrated in the Gospels, but an artistic meditation on the First Sorrowful Mystery: the Agony of Our Lord Jesus Christ in the Garden of Olives. The images, musical themes, and symbols present in this video represent my personal way of contemplating this mystery and translating it into music. The narrative begins in the silence of the night. After the Last Supper, Jesus arrives at Gethsemane with the Apostles and withdraws to pray. The Hail Marys accompany the Savior as He contemplates the weight of the sins of the world and completely surrenders Himself to the will of the Father. The images portray the spiritual battle taking place in the garden. I also wished to depict Satan approaching Christ in the hour of His agony, vainly attempting to turn Him away from the mission entrusted to Him by the Father. The music follows this decisive struggle until the victory of the Lord, who rejects every temptation and freely accepts the sacrifice of the Cross for the salvation of humanity. The following scenes show the Apostles asleep and unable to keep watch with Him, while Jesus perseveres in prayer. After this struggle, an angel comes to comfort Him, and a light of hope shines through the darkness of the night. The final part of the mystery is dedicated to the arrival of Judas and the band sent to arrest the Lord. The images depict the betrayal of the kiss, the confusion of the disciples, and Christ’s voluntary surrender into the hands of His enemies. He who could have called upon legions of angels instead chooses to offer Himself out of love for mankind. The final Hail Mary is dedicated to Christian families throughout the world who continue to pray the Holy Rosary amid the joys and trials of life. The images show families from different continents gathered in prayer, united by the same faith and the same hope. The mystery concludes with the Gloria Patri, inviting us to contemplate the triumph of divine love already present in Gethsemane. Here begins the redemptive sacrifice that will reach its fulfillment on Calvary. To Him be glory, honor, and praise forever and ever. Amen.
