Sung Rosary – Second Sorrowful Mystery - The Scourging of Jesus

This is the second episode of the Sorrowful Mysteries of the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, meditated upon by me, Matthaeus Ruber, through music, singing, and imagery. This work is not intended to be merely a simple illustration of the events narrated in the Gospels, but rather an artistic meditation on the Second Sorrowful Mystery: the Scourging of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The images, musical themes, and symbols present in this video express my personal way of contemplating this mystery and translating it into music. The narrative begins with Jesus being brought before the High Priest Caiaphas and then before Pontius Pilate. The Hail Mary prayers accompany the Lord as He faces false accusations, interrogations, humiliations, and mockery. He who is Eternal Truth allows Himself to be judged by men and freely accepts the path that leads Him to the Cross. Alongside the events of the Passion, the images portray a solemn Papal Mass. The various parts of the liturgy are placed in parallel with the sufferings of Christ, highlighting the profound theological connection between the Sacrifice of the Cross and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. What the Lord offered once and for all on Calvary continues to be made sacramentally present upon the altars of the world. After Pilate’s judgment, the narrative leads to the scourging. The music accompanies the suffering of the Savior as the blows fall upon His innocent body. The images seek to portray the cruelty of this scene without focusing solely on physical pain, showing above all the infinite love with which Christ accepts suffering for the redemption of humanity. The final Hail Mary is dedicated to Christian families who continue to pray the Holy Rosary in their homes. The images show men, women, and children from different peoples gathered in prayer, united by the same faith and the same hope, as they entrust their joys, sufferings, and future to God. The mystery concludes with the Gloria Patri, inviting us to contemplate the love of Christ, who accepted to be scourged for our salvation and opened for us the way to eternal life.
