Since all things, even the most sacred, especially those that depend on human will, are subject to change, it is not surprising that the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary retained its initial fervor only for about a hundred years after its establishment; thus it was almost buried in oblivion. Furthermore, the malice and envy of the devil undoubtedly contributed much to the neglect of the Holy Rosary, hindering the flow of God's graces that this devotion attracted into the world. Indeed, divine justice afflicted all the kingdoms of Europe in 1349 with a terrible plague never seen, which spread from the East to Italy, Germany, France, Poland and Hungary, and from there almost all these lands were devastated, for scarcely a hundred men survived; cities, towns, villages and monasteries were completely deserted during the three years that this contagion lasted. And this scourge of God was followed by two others: the heresy of the Flagellants and the unfortunate schism in 1376.
