What shall I say of Blessed Alan de la Rupe, the restorer of this devotion? The Blessed Virgin honored him many times with her visitations, to instruct him in the ways of attaining salvation, of being a good priest, a perfect religious, and an imitator of Jesus Christ. Amidst the terrible temptations and persecutions of demons, which reduced him to extreme sadness and almost despair, she consoled him and dispelled all these clouds and darknesses with her gentle presence. She taught him the method of saying the Rosary, its virtues and fruits; she adorned him with the glorious title of a new bridegroom; and, as a pledge of her chaste affections, she placed a ring on his finger, a necklace made of her hair around his neck, and gave him a Rosary. Abbot Tritemus, the learned Cartagena, the learned man Martin of Navarre, and others speak of him with praise. After having attracted more than a hundred thousand souls to the Confraternity of the Rosary, he died at Zwolle in Flanders on the eighth of September.
