The devil, envious of the great fruits which Blessed Thomas of Saint John, the illustrious preacher of the Holy Rosary, was bringing about in this matter, reduced him, through bad treatment, to a long and serious illness in which the doctors had lost hope. One night, when he believed that he was certainly going to die, the devil appeared to him in a terrible form, but raising his eyes and heart directly to the image of the Blessed Virgin, which was near his bed, he cried out with all his might: Help me, succor me, oh my sweetest Mother! He had hardly finished these words when the Blessed Virgin extended the hand of the holy image to him, embraced his arm, and said: Do not be afraid, my son Thomas, I am here to help you. Arise and continue to preach the devotion of my Rosary, as you have begun. I will defend you against all your enemies. At these words of the Blessed Virgin, the devil fled. The sick man arose, in perfect health, and thanked the good Mother, and continued to preach the Rosary with wonderful success.
