To you, miserable sinners, a greater sinner than you offers this rose, red with the blood of Jesus Christ, to adorn and preserve you. Wicked and impenitent sinners cry out daily: Let us crown ourselves with roses: let us crown ourselves with roses. Let us also sing: Let us crown ourselves with the roses of the Holy Rosary. Ah! How different their roses are from ours! Their roses are carnal pleasures, vain honors, and perishable riches, which will soon wither and rot. But ours, which are the Our Father and the Hail Mary well said, united with the good works of our penance, will never wither or fade, and their splendor will be as bright after a hundred thousand years as it is now. Their roses, which are called, have only the appearance of roses; in reality, they are nothing but thorns, pricking in the life of conscience with repentance, piercing in the death of repentance, and burning forever with anger and despair. If our roses have thorns, they are the thorns of Jesus Christ, who transforms our thorns into roses. If our roses sting, they sting only for a time; they sting only to heal and save us from sin.
