But now let us consider the injustice of the hindrance to the progress of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary and the punishments with which God has afflicted many unfortunate souls who have despised it and attempted to destroy it. Although devotion to the Holy Rosary has been authorized by heaven with many miracles and approved by the Church by several papal bulls, there are too many libertines, impious, and free thinkers of our time who either seek to discredit the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary, or at least to expel its faithful. It is easy to see their tongues infected with infernal poison and agitated by a malignant spirit, for no one can disapprove of devotion to the Holy Rosary without condemning that which is most pious in the Christian religion, namely the Lord's Prayer, the Hail Mary, and the mysteries of the life, death, and glory of Jesus Christ and his Holy Mother. These men with strong minds, who cannot bear to have the Rosary recited, often, thoughtlessly, fall into the condemnation of heretics, who abhor the crown and the Rosary. To abhor confraternities is to stray from God and true piety, since Jesus Christ assures us that he is in the midst of those who are gathered in his name. It is not good to be a Catholic to neglect so many indulgences that the Church grants to confraternities. Finally, it is an enemy of the salvation of souls to dissuade the faithful from praying the Holy Rosary, since in this way they abandon the path of sin to embrace piety. If Saint Bonaventure rightly said that he who neglects the Blessed Virgin will die in his sin and be damned: Whoever neglects her will die in his sins (in his psalter), how many punishments must await those who turn others away from her devotion!... 10 Rose
