The Lord's Prayer, or Our Father, derives its special excellence from its author, who is not a man or an angel, but the King of angels and men, Jesus Christ. It was necessary, says Saint Cyprian, that He who came to give us the life of grace as a Savior should teach us how to pray as a heavenly Master. The wisdom of this divine Master is manifest in the order, gentleness, strength, and clarity of this divine prayer; it is brief, yet abounding in instructions, intelligible in simplicity, and full of learned mysteries. The Lord's Prayer contains all the duties we owe to God, the acts of all the virtues, and petitions for all our spiritual and bodily necessities. It contains, says Tertullian, the sum of the Gospel. It surpasses, says Thomas a Kempis, all the desires of the saints; it contains in a concise form all the sweet sayings of the psalms and canticles; it asks for all that is necessary for us; it praises God excellently; it elevates the soul from earth to heaven and unites it closely with God.
