Saint Chrysostom says that he who does not pray as the divine Master prayed and taught others to pray is not his disciple, and God the Father does not willingly hear the prayers formed by the human mind, but rather those of his Son, which he taught us. We should recite the Lord's Prayer with the certainty that the eternal Father will hear it, since it is the prayer of his Son, to whom he always listens, and we are his members. For how can such a good Father refuse a petition so well conceived and supported by the merits and commendation of so worthy a Son? Saint Augustine assures us that the Lord's Prayer, when recited correctly, washes away venial sins. Seven times the just fall. The Lord's Prayer contains seven petitions with which one can remedy his falls and strengthen himself against enemies. It is short and easy, so that, since we are fragile and subject to many miseries, we may more readily receive help by reciting it more often and more devoutly.
