Beware, then, devout souls, who neglect the Prayer which the Son of God himself composed and commanded to all the faithful, you who esteem only prayers composed by men, as if a man, even the most enlightened, knew better than Jesus Christ how we should pray. You seek in the books of men the way of praising and praying to God, as if he were ashamed to use those which his Son prescribed for us. You persuade yourselves that prayers are in books for the learned and the rich, and that the Rosary is only for women, children, and the common people, as if the praises and prayers which you have read were more beautiful and more pleasing to God than those contained in the Lord's Prayer. It is a dangerous temptation to become weary of the Prayer which Jesus Christ commended to us, so that we may embrace prayers composed by men. We do not disapprove of those prayers which the saints composed to incite the faithful to praise God, but we cannot allow them to prefer them to the Prayer which flowed from the mouth of the Incarnate Wisdom, and to abandon the fountain to pursue streams, and to despise clear water to drink turbid water. For the Rosary, composed of the Lord's Prayer and the Hail Mary, is that clear and perpetual water which flows from the fountain of grace, while the other prayers which they seek in books are but little streams which flow from it.
