The Angelic Salutation is so sublime, so sublime, that Blessed Alan de la Rupe believed that no creature could comprehend it and that only Jesus Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, could explain it. Its excellence derives mainly from the Blessed Virgin to whom it was addressed, from the culmination of the Incarnation of the Word, for which reason it was brought from heaven, and from the Archangel Gabriel, who was the first to pronounce it. The Angelic Salutation, in its shortest form, summarizes all Christian theology about the Blessed Virgin. It contains both praise and invocation. Praise encompasses all that constitutes the true greatness of Mary; invocation contains all that we should ask of her and all that we can expect from her goodness towards us. The Most Holy Trinity revealed the first part; Saint Elizabeth, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, added the second; and the Church, at the First Council of Ephesus, held in the year 430, concluded it, after condemning the error of Nestorius and defining the Blessed Virgin to be truly the Mother of God. The Council decreed that the Blessed Virgin be invoked under this glorious title with these words: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.
