The Angelus, while giving glory to the Holy Trinity, is also the most perfect praise we can offer to Mary. Saint Melchtilde, desiring to know how best to express the tenderness of her devotion to the Mother of God, was carried away by the spirit, and with this thought, the Blessed Virgin appeared to her, bearing the Angelic Salutation written in golden letters on her breast, and said to her: “I know, my daughter, that no one can honor me with a more gracious salutation than that which the adorable Trinity offered me, and by which she raised me to the dignity of the Mother of God. In the word ‘Hail,’ which is the name of Eve, I learned that God, in His omnipotence, had saved me from all sin and from the miseries to which the first woman was subjected. The name ‘Mary,’ which is interpreted as Lady of Light, signifies that God had filled me with wisdom and light, like a shining star, to illuminate heaven and earth. These words, ‘full of grace,’ signify to me that the Holy Spirit has filled me with so many graces that I can communicate them abundantly to those who ask through my mediation. When they say, “The Lord is with you,” they renew to me the ineffable joy that I felt when the eternal Word was incarnate in my womb. When they say to me, Blessed are you among women, I praise the divine mercy that has raised me to this high degree of happiness. With these words, Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus, all heaven rejoices with me in seeing my Son Jesus adored and glorified for having saved the human race. 17 Rose
