When the saint, on a certain feast day of Saint John the Evangelist, at Our Lady of Paris, behind the high altar, in the chapel, was preparing to preach the holy Rosary, the Blessed Virgin appeared to him and said: Lord, although you have prepared good things to preach, behold a much better sermon than I bring you. Saint Dominic took the book containing this sermon from her hands, read it, tasted it and understood it, giving thanks to the Blessed Virgin. When the time for the sermon arrived, he ascended the pulpit and, after saying nothing in praise of Saint John the Evangelist except that he had deserved to be the guardian of the Queen of Heaven, he told the entire assembly of dignitaries and doctors who had come to hear him – who were accustomed to hearing only curious and polished speeches – that he would speak for him, not with the learned words of human wisdom, but with the simplicity and power of the Holy Spirit. Then Saint Dominic preached the Holy Rosary to them and explained the Angelic Salutation word by word, as if to children, using the simplest comparisons that he had read on a paper given to him by the Blessed Virgin.
