Brother Alphonsus Rodriguez, of the Society of Jesus, recited his Rosary with such fervor that he often saw a scarlet rose rise from his lips with each Our Father, and with each Hail Mary, a white one, equal in beauty and fragrance, but different in color. The Chronicles of Saint Francis relate that a certain young friar had the commendable habit of reciting the Chaplet of the Blessed Virgin every day before supper. One day, for some unknown reason, he did not celebrate it; when the supper bell rang, he asked his superior for permission to recite it before approaching the table. This being granted, he retired to his room, but when he tarried too long, the superior sent a brother to call him. This religious found him in his room, radiant with heavenly light, and the Blessed Virgin with two angels beside her. While he was reciting the Hail Mary, a beautiful rose rose from his mouth. The angels took the roses one after the other and placed them on the head of the Blessed Virgin, who expressed their joy. Two other religious, sent to investigate the cause of the others' delay, saw this whole mystery, and the Blessed Virgin did not disappear until the chaplet had been recited. The Rosary is therefore a large chaplet, and the corolla a small cap of flowers or a small crown of heavenly roses placed on the heads of Jesus and Mary. The rose is the queen of flowers, and likewise the Rosary is the rose and the first of devotions. 8 Rose
