The Blessed Virgin Mary not only favors those who preach the Rosary, but also gloriously rewards those who, by their example, draw others to this devotion. Alfonso, King of Leon and Galicia, wishing that all his ministers should honor the Blessed Virgin the Rosary, conceived the idea of inspiring them by his example, to carry a great Rosary with him, but without reciting it: this compelled all the people of his court to recite it devoutly. The king fell seriously ill, and when he was considered dead, he was taken in spirit to the judgment seat of Jesus Christ. He saw demons accusing him of all the crimes he had committed, and the judge who was about to condemn him to eternal punishment. The Blessed Virgin appeared before her Son for him. A scale was brought, all the sins of the king were placed in a basin, and the Blessed Virgin placed in it the great Rosary which he had made in his honor, together with those which she had inspired to be recited by her example. This weighed more than all his sins. Then, looking at him kindly, he said: From my Son, for the small service you have rendered me by praying the Rosary, I have obtained the prolongation of your life for a few years. Make good use of them, and do penance. The king, recovering from this rapture, exclaimed: O blessed Rosary of the Blessed Virgin, by which I have been freed from eternal damnation! After he recovered his health, he spent the rest of his life devoted to the Holy Rosary and recited it daily. May the devotees of the Blessed Virgin strive to acquire as many faithful as possible for the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary; following the example of these saints and this king, they will have her favor here on earth and eternal life.
