The learned Cartagena, of the Franciscan order, together with many other authors, reports that in the year 1482, when the venerable Father Jacob Sprenger, together with his brothers, were diligently working to restore the devotion and society of the Holy Rosary in the city of Cologne, two illustrious preachers, jealous of the great fruits which they were gathering from this rite, attempted to discredit it in their sermons. For since they were skilled and powerful, they deterred many from attending. One of these preachers, in order to better carry out his pernicious plan, prepared a sermon for this very purpose and set it for a Sunday. When the time for the sermon arrived, the preacher did not appear. They waited, searched for him, and finally found him dead, having received no help from anyone. The other preacher, convinced that this was a natural accident, decided to compensate for his deficiency by abolishing the Society of the Rosary. When the day and hour of the sermon arrived, God punished this preacher with paralysis, which deprived him of both movement and speech. He acknowledged his own guilt and that of his companion, and in his heart he turned to the Blessed Virgin, promising that he would preach the Rosary everywhere with as much force as she had opposed him. He prayed that she would restore his health and speech, which the Blessed Virgin granted him, and finding himself suddenly cured, like another Saul, he rose from a persecutor to a defender of the Holy Rosary. He publicly made amends for his guilt and preached the excellence of the Holy Rosary with great zeal and eloquence.
