The Apostles' Creed, recited on the cross of the Rosary, since it is a sacred summary and abbreviation of Christian truths, is a prayer of great merit, because faith is the basis, foundation and beginning of all Christian virtues, of all eternal virtues and of all prayers that please God. He who approaches God by prayer must believe. He who approaches God by prayer must begin by believing, and the more faith he has, the more strength and merit his prayer will have in it, and the more glory it will give to God. I will not dwell on explaining the words of the Apostles' Creed, but I cannot help but declare that these first three words, I believe in God: I believe in God, which contain the acts of the three theological virtues – faith, hope and charity – have a wonderful efficacy in sanctifying the soul and conquering the devil. With these words many saints overcame temptations, especially those that were against faith, hope or charity, whether in life or at the hour of death. These were the last words that Saint Peter the Martyr, with his finger stuck in the sand as best he could, wrote when, having his head split in two by a blow from a sword inflicted by a heretic, he was approaching death.
