My Hail Mary, my Rosary, or my crown, is my prayer and my surest touchstone, to distinguish those who are led by the Spirit of God from those who are under the illusion of the evil one. I know souls who, as they seemed to be flying like eagles to the clouds in sublime contemplation, and yet were unfortunately deceived by the devil. I found their illusions only through the Hail Mary and the crown, which they rejected as if below themselves. The Hail Mary is a heavenly and divine dew, which, falling into the soul of the predestined, imparts to it admirable fruitfulness for producing every kind of virtue. And the more the soul is nourished by this prayer, the more it is enlightened in mind, inflamed in heart, and fortified against all its enemies. The Hail Mary is a piercing and fiery dart, which, united by the preacher to the Word of God which he proclaims, gives him the power to penetrate, touch, and convert even the hardest hearts, even if otherwise he does not possess much natural talent for preaching. This mysterious spear, as I have already said, the Blessed Virgin taught to Saint Dominic and Blessed Alan, to convert heretics and sinners. Hence arose the custom of preachers saying the Ave Maria at the beginning of their sermons, as Saint Antoninus affirms. 18 Rose
