Whoever loves you, oh divine Mary, says blessed Alan de la Rupe, let him hear and taste: Heaven rejoices, the earth marvels, whenever I say: Hail Mary, I detest the world, I have the love of God in my heart; when I say: Hail Mary, my fears vanish, my passions are mortified; when I say: Hail Mary, I believe in devotion, I find compunction; when I say: Hail Mary, my hope is strengthened, my consolation increases; when I say: Hail Mary, my spirit rejoices, my sorrow is dissipated, when I say: Hail Mary, for the sweetness of this gentle salutation is so great that no word can sufficiently explain it, and after wonderful things have been said about it, it remains so hidden and so profound that it cannot be found. It is short in words, but great in mysteries; it is sweeter than Honey is more precious than gold; one should often have it in one's heart to meditate on, and read it on one's lips and repeat it devoutly. Hearken to thy name, O Mary, heaven rejoices, all the earth is astonished when I say Hail Mary. Satan flees, hell trembles, when I say Hail Mary the world becomes vile, the heart melts in love, when I say Hail Mary fear vanishes, the flesh withers, when I say Hail Mary devotion increases, the flesh withers, when I say Hail Mary increases. When I say Hail Mary, the mind is refreshed, and the sick person is comforted in good when I say Hail Mary. It is small in words, deep in mysteries, short in speech, high in virtue, sweeter than honey, more precious than gold, it is to be constantly chewed on with the mouth of the heart and most frequently recited and devoutly repeated with pure lips. The same blessed Alan relates, in chapter 69 of his Psalter, that a certain nun who was very devoted to the Rosary appeared to one of her sisters after death and said to her: If I could return to my body so that I could say just one Hail Mary, although without great fervor, so that I might have the merit of this prayer, I would gladly endure again the pains that I suffered before death. It should be noted that she suffered violent pains in her bed for several years.
