do not doubt that the brave and critical minds of this time, who read the fables in this short treatise, will, as they always have, call them into question, although I have done no more than transcribe them from the most expert contemporary authors and partly from a book recently composed by the Reverend Father Antoninus Thomas, of the Order of Preachers, entitled: The Mystical Rose. Everyone knows that there are three kinds of faith in different fables. We owe divine faith to the fables of Holy Scripture; human faith to profane fables, which are not repugnant to reason and have been written by good authors; pious faith to pious fables, related by good authors and in no way opposed to reason, faith or good morals, although they are sometimes extraordinary. I admit that one should be neither too credulous nor too critical, and should hold a middle ground in all things so that a point of truth and virtue may be found. But I also know that just as charity readily believes all things that are not contrary to faith or good morals: *Charity believes all things*, so also pride leads a person to deny almost all well-proven stories, under the pretext that they are not in Holy Scripture. This is the snare of Satan, into which heretics who deny tradition have fallen, and into which critics of the time are gradually falling, not believing what they do not understand, or what does not concern them, for no other reason than the pride and self-sufficiency of their minds.
