We can call him blessed who, reciting the Lord's Prayer, carefully weighs each word, finding in them all that is necessary for him, all that he can desire. When we recite this admirable prayer, we first of all capture the heart of God by invoking him by the sweet name of the Father. Our Father, the most tender of all fathers, omnipotent in creation, all-admirable in its preservation, all-loving in his Providence, all-good and infinitely good in redemption. God is our Father, we are all brothers and sisters, heaven is our homeland and our inheritance. Is it not enough for him to inspire in us both the love of God, and the love of our neighbor, and separation from all earthly things? Let us therefore love such a Father and say to him a thousand times: Our Father who art in heaven. You who fill heaven and earth with the immensity of your essence, who are present everywhere, you who are your glory in the saints, your justice in the damned, your grace in the just, your patience in sinners, grant that we may always remember our heavenly origin, that we may live as your true children, that we may always strive to you alone with all the fervor of our desires. Hallowed be your name. The name of the Lord is holy and terrible, says the king-prophet, and heaven, according to Isaiah, resounds with the praises which the seraphim offer without ceasing to the holiness of the Lord, the God of hosts. Here we pray that every land may know and adore the attributes of this God so great and so holy, that he may be known, loved and adored by pagans, Turks, Jews, barbarians and all infidels; that all peoples may serve and glorify him with living faith, firm hope, ardent charity and the renunciation of all errors: finally, that all peoples may be holy because he himself is holy. Thy kingdom come. This is to say, that in our souls your grace may reign in this life, that after our death we may deserve to reign with you in your kingdom, which is the supreme and eternal beatitude which we believe, hope and await – this beatitude promised to us by the goodness of the Father, acquired by the merits of the Son, and revealed by the light of the Holy Spirit. Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Without a doubt, nothing can escape the provisions of divine Providence, which has foreseen and arranged everything before the event; no obstacle can deter it from the end which it has set before itself. And when we ask God that his will be done, it is not that we fear, says Tertullian, lest anyone effectively hinder the execution of his counsels, but because we humbly acquiesce in all that he has deigned to order us, so that we may always and in all things fulfill his most holy will, which is known to us through his commandments, with as much readiness, love and constancy as the angels and the blessed obey him in heaven.
