From the time Saint Dominic instituted this devotion until the year 1460, when Blessed Alan de la Rupe, by heavenly command, renewed it, it was called the Psalter of Jesus and the Blessed Virgin, because it contains as many Angelic Salutations as the Psalter of David contains psalms, and because, although the simple and ignorant cannot recite the Psalter of David, in the recitation of the Holy Rosary a fruit is found equal to that which is derived from the recitation of the Psalms of David, and even more abundant: 1. Because the angelic psalter has a nobler fruit, namely: the Incarnate Word, while the Psalter of David only prefigures it. 2. Just as truth surpasses its figure and body, so also the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin surpasses the Psalter of David, which was only its shadow and figure. 3. Because the Holy Trinity immediately made the Psalter of the Blessed Virgin or the Rosary composed of the Father and the Hail Mary. The grammarian Cartagena reports on this matter: Sapientissimus Aquinas, in his book on the Rosacea Crown written to Emperor Maximilian, says: The rite of greeting Mary is hardly attributed to new inventions.
